I would like to add, though, that a good Japanese barber gives the same kind of service as you described. Before I started going to the cheap, multi-staff barbershops of modern Japan, I went to a traditional barbershop run by a single aging Japanese gentlemen who was meticulous in his work. I got the full head and shoulders massage, I had my forehead shaved (?), eyebrows and nostrils plucked a bit and got a proper shave, too. To be honest, it was a bit much for me and took a good hour, but the experience was one of a kind. I feel all rejuvenated just reading about your experience!
